The great debate. Blacks have been dealing with this issue for as long as I can remember, and no I am not talking about racism (duh). I am talking about dealing with Hispanics or other minorities using the word nigga.
Before I start, I want to say to those who say, "Nobody should use that word. It's a filthy word..blah blah blah." Stop. We're going to use the word. It's not going to go away and it's a part of our everyday vocabulary as Black people. There have been many people who explain why they use this word and people who explain why they don't. However, I can only speak for me and my actions.
There is no doubt that Blacks have created a culture that has had an impact on the entire world. When we move everyone watches, people want to be us so bad that we have coined the term "Culture Vulture"for these individuals that take from what we create. Our culture is so great, that even with all the struggle that we've gone through and still see, people ultimately still want to be "That Nigga".
What brings up this topic is an episode of "Black Group Therapy" a series created by my peer and fellow creative, John The Author ( you can watch the conversation below).
There are so many views on this issue. What I personally believe, and what is brought up in this episode is the fact that Black Americans have a unique experience. Different from any other group here in America. How we have managed to survive while we theres a system that's against us and wages war against us daily. Blacks are not immigrants, we are more American than any white person in this country. We built this country for free and people still capitalize off of our ancestors' free labor.
Even though Hispanics have their own struggles and face lots of issues, what they experience is not the same as Blacks. Hispanics are still seen as an ally in the system of white supremacy. Hispanics have never and will never be a targeted group like Blacks are. Hispanics will never understand what it's like to be Black in America. Lots of Hispanics are prejudice towards Blacks themselves.
They want to say so bad how they are minorities too and go through similar things. Stop! This is an insult. This goes for any minority group. It doesn't matter what battles you've dealt with personally. Your group of people weren't called nigger for centuries, nor did they have different laws put in place to keep them from excelling decade after decade.
To end. Blacks use the N word when talking amongst each other as an understanding of struggle. We ultimately changed the meaning of the word. We are able to use the word amongst us and they are not, for the simple fact that others are granted many freedoms that we aren't.
When someone wants to use the word who isn't' Black, I have to question their motive. Most of the times people are using it will ill intent. The N word is a word that WE reclaimed. We hold the power because we are the ones who are the culture. We are the popular kids at the table that everyone wants to sit with. It is us who have to say this is a party that you're not welcomed to. We've endured the harshest conditions, and a word that binds us together is not for those who don't understand to ever say.
