Gucci Black Face Sweater Just in Time for Black History Month?

If you haven’t heard by now Gucci is trending over a racist sweater design that resembles blackface. The brand issued apologies stating it, “deeply apologizes for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper."

Anyone with eyes could see that the turtleneck clearly resembles horrific images of those used during Jim Crow to mock and stereotype Black people. But for some reason the team at Gucci thought it was okay. The turtleneck, which is no longer featured on Gucci's website, features an over the face design with oversized red lips.

In light of it being Black History Month, I have some reason to believe that this was done on purpose. Maybe it was a way of Gucci to commemorate blackface during our month of celebration? Maybe some would say that I’m reaching, but it’s definitely something to consider.

With the racist history of the fashion industry, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that this could be their agenda.

It makes you wonder if the company wanted the spotlight, because as the saying goes, "There’s no such thing as bad publicity." It's really hard to believe that after the controversy with the H&M ad and even the racist Prada accessory, that Gucci could make such an outrageous mistake.

This incident comes after photos leaked of Virginia gov. Ralph Northam’s 1984 yearbook that included pictures of a man wearing blackface and another wearing a KKK robe. Northam is said to have confessed to being one of the men in the photo, but then later saying it was not him in the picture.

It’s sad that such things still have to haunt us as Blacks in 2019, but even more sad that it happens during a month that's suppose to be dedicated to celebrating our excellence.
